Use the restroom before departure
Bring a light jacket or sweater – You'll descend from Antigua's elevation to Lake Atitlán's cooler climate
Bring comfortable walking shoes – San Pedro's lakeside area features narrow alleys and cobblestone streets
Apply sunscreen and bring a hat – The high-altitude sun and water reflection are intense
Bring cash in small bills – Quetzals (GTQ) are preferred. USD is accepted in tourist areas. ATMs are available throughout town
Bring a small crossbody bag – Avoid large backpacks for easier navigation through crowded streets
San Pedro is known as Lake Atitlán's backpacker hub and "gringo destination." It attracts a mix of budget travelers, long-term language students, party-goers, and adventure seekers. Despite its touristic reputation, it maintains authentic Mayan culture in the upper town and offers genuine opportunities for Spanish learning and community connection.
Vibe: Laid-back, international, vibrant, social. More touristy and party-oriented than smaller lake villages like San Juan La Laguna or Santa Cruz, but offers more amenities and activities.
