About this trip

Picture yourself standing atop one of Guatemala's most sacred peaks while the rest of the world is still fast asleep. This is Rostro Maya — the "Mayan Face," also known as Indian Nose — a majestic ridge whose silhouette traces the profile of a reclining human face gazing up at the heavens. For the Tz'utujil Maya communities who have called these highlands home for centuries, this mountain is holy ground, still used today for sacred ceremonies. And from its summit awaits, quite simply, the most breathtaking sunrise over Lake Atitlán you will ever witness.

Our adventure begins at 4:00 AM, when we pick you up directly from your hotel in San Pedro La Laguna under a blanket of stars. After a comfortable 40-minute drive to Santa Clara La Laguna, the real journey starts: a 45-minute ascent along a trail alive with nature. You'll climb through fragrant coffee plantations, avocado groves, and fields of maize, surrounded by the whisper of the waking forest and the crisp mountain air. The pace is moderate and welcoming; you don't need to be an athlete, just an adventurer ready for something unforgettable.

When you reach the summit, around 2,200 meters above sea level, the real magic unfolds. The sky becomes a living canvas, blazing pinks, golds, and fiery oranges spilling across the horizon as the sun creeps slowly from behind a dramatic chain of volcanoes. From this perch you'll take in a sweeping 360-degree panorama: the entire lake glistening below, the towering San Pedro, Tolimán, and Atitlán volcanoes, and the colorful indigenous villages scattered along the shoreline. On the clearest mornings, the reward is even greater, distant Acatenango, Agua, and Fuego come into view, and you might even catch Volcán de Fuego erupting, spitting fire against the dawn.

To make the moment perfect, we'll warm your hands with a steaming cup of hot chocolate or coffee, grown right here in the Atitlán highlands. As the light transforms before your eyes, shifting with every passing minute. This is the moment for your finest photos, your videos, the memories that stay etched in your heart long after you've left Guatemala. Once you've soaked in every detail of this mystical experience, we begin a relaxed 20-minute descent, where our transport waits to carry you back to San Pedro La Laguna — energized, fulfilled, and forever changed by something truly authentic.
