Rainbow Mountain Without Hiking: Just a 10-Minute Walk

On this tour the ATV takes you to just below the Vinicunca viewpoint, and from there it's a short walk of about 10 minutes.

• To the top: a short, steep path to the main viewpoint at 5,036 m (16,522 ft)

• Rather not climb? A flat path of a few minutes leads to another lookout, and the mountain is already in view where the ATVs park

• Several spots at the top for photos, with Ausangate (6,384 m / 20,945 ft) across the valley

• Compared with the hike: the classic trail takes most people under two hours up

Rainbow Mountain Quad Bike Ride: No Experience Needed

No experience is needed. The ATVs are automatic, and before setting off you get a briefing and a few practice laps on flat ground.

• Single or double ATVs: ride your own, or sit behind someone as a passenger

• The group rides together behind the guide, at the guide's pace

• It's a calm, scenic ride across the highlands, not a race: speeding isn't allowed

What the ATV doesn't change is the altitude. The viewpoint sits at 5,036 m and Cusco at 3,399 m (11,152 ft), so even the 10-minute walk leaves most people short of breath. Spend two full days in Cusco first. The tour carries emergency oxygen.

Best Time for the Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour

The dry season, May to September, has the clearest skies, and June is the most reliable month. From November to April, afternoons bring rain, and snow can cover the stripes, most often from December to March.

The 3:00 AM start gets you to the mountain early in the morning. Nobody can promise the weather up here, but the colors are at their strongest under a clear sky.

What to bring

• Gloves: at 3 AM on an ATV, they're the one thing people regret leaving behind

• Warm layers you can peel off (jacket, thermal top and leggings, wool hat): the start is freezing, and by midday the van is warm

• A buff or neck gaiter, for the wind and dust on the ride

• Shoes with good grip: the short walk to the top is steep and loose, sometimes icy

• Sunscreen, UV sunglasses and lip balm

• A small daypack only: luggage and large bags aren't allowed

• Cash in soles: S/ 30 for the entrance, in small notes

• Difficulty: The ATV does the climbing. The only walking is about 10 minutes up a short, steep path to the viewpoint, at your own pace, or a few flat minutes to a second lookout.

• Riding the ATV: A calm group ride, not a race. Everyone follows the guide at the same speed, and riding fast or overtaking isn't allowed. The ATVs are automatic, and you get practice laps first.

• Altitude: The viewpoint is 5,036 m (16,522 ft), the official MINCETUR figure and the one on the sign at the top. Cusco is 3,399 m. Riding saves you the effort, not the altitude. The tour carries emergency oxygen.

• Acclimatization: Spend two full days in Cusco first. You barely walk here, but the altitude still affects you.

• Duration: About 12 hours. Pick-up from 3:00 AM, back at the Plaza de Armas between 2:30 and 3:00 PM.

• Cold: The 3:00 AM start is freezing, and you ride in near-freezing wind. Gloves, a hat and warm layers are essential. Buy gloves in Cusco, not at the base.

• Best season: May to September is the driest and clearest, and June is the most reliable month. From November to April, expect afternoon rain and snow that can hide the colors, most often from December to March.

• Weather: Changeable, and nobody can guarantee it. It can be sunny at breakfast and snowing at the viewpoint.
