Acatenango without the 5–6 hour climb. A shared 4×4 picks you up at the Tanque de la Unión meeting point in Antigua Guatemala at 8:00 AM (Monday to Thursday) and drives you up a private farm road to about 3,400 meters. From the parking area you walk around 40 minutes to base camp.
At base camp you sleep in a shared cabin for 6, 8 or 10 people (depending on group size and availability), with mattresses and sleeping bags already in place, and you get front-row views of Fuego Volcano erupting in the evening. Lunch, dinner and breakfast are included, plus a bonfire with hot chocolate.
On day 2 you start the sunrise hike to the summit of Acatenango at 4:00 AM, watch the sunrise from the top, ride the 4×4 back down to the farm for breakfast and arrive in Antigua at around 9:30 AM.
The 4×4 vehicles, cabins and gear are run by local operators with authorized access to the farm. This tour is ideal for anyone who wants to see Fuego erupt with much less effort: older travelers, people with knee or back problems, or anyone who prefers an easier way up the volcano.
